Growing up I always knew Betty had another job besides teaching and over the years I have gotten to know and love the El Cajon Project and its mission and I love being a part of it.”

Tom Smare

Tom Smare (Student Liaison)
Tomsmare@elcajonproject.org

Tom Smare has worked in education since 1980. He began working for the Fremont Union High School District (Sunnyvale/Cupertino) in 1997 as a Job Coach, Transition Specialist & Job Developer. He acquired his credential in 2000 and began teaching Work Experience/Life Skills for FUHSD. Tom is currently at Homestead High School in Cupertino, where he has been since 2003. As a part of his job he also oversee the operation of a fully functioning on-campus Smoothie Shop, which is staffed completely by FUHSD students and managed by the students from his Homestead class.

Beyond Tom’s teaching experience he has also worked in the concert production industry for Bill Graham Presents and now Live Nation, beginning in 1986 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, which continues to this day. He has worked in a variety of areas over those years, including many managerial positions, and that experience has helped him with his teaching profession. Tom’s position at Shoreline Amphitheatre has also allowed him to hire many of his students to their first jobs, which he says is gratifying to both them and himself.
